1/2 cup shortening (Crisco or butter)
1 cup sugar
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk is best (or 1 cup milk, with 1 tsp vinegar added)
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Vanilla ice cream ~ Chocolate syrup (I like dark chocolate)
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add melted chocolate and eggs; beat well. Whisk together flour, baking soda and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla.
Pour into greased (or sprayed) 8” square pan. Cover and bake at 300 for about 1 hour.
Best when served warm ~ Spoon the hot fudge bottom layer over the cake ~ Top with ice cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup. Serves 6-8
