2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Mix salt and flour. Add in half the water, then gradually add the remaining water. Knead until dough is smooth. (This can take up to 10 minutes)
Roll out dough on parchment or waxed paper to 1/4 – 1/2 “ thick. Use cookie cutters, cut-out templates, or your hands. Dust dough with flour and begin to add details to the ornaments with a toothpick, popsicle stick, and knife. Add little dough balls, if desired. Use a garlic press to make “hair” for Santa’s beard, lions, dogs, or create Raggedy Ann dolls from gingerbread girl cookie cutters. (Trees and wreaths are perhaps the easiest) ~
Use a straw to make a hole so you can hang the ornament ~ or just stick a metal hook securely into the top before baking.
Baking: Time varies based on thickness of ornament
Temperature: 325 degrees
Time: 1-1/2 hours - or until dry
Decorate: Let cool before you begin. Paint with acrylic paints (get a small set w/brushes at the dollar store. These can be as simple or complicated as you want.
Preservation: I have some that are over 30 yrs old! Spray with acrylic varnish when everything is dry.
