Crusty BREAD * no yeast *
4 cups flour………………………………………......... 1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar……………………………………….......... 1-1/2 cups water
2 tsp. baking powder………………………....……. 2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. vinegar (cider or white)……………….…. 1 TB butter
Heat oven to 375. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Combine dry ingredients and mix. Combine water and vinegar. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix.
Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes (until it isn’t sticky). Shape into a round or rectangle loaf and put onto the pan. Dip a sharp knife into flour and cut an 'X' into the top of the round loaf, or about 3-4 diagonal cuts across the top of the rectangle loaf.
Bake 35-45 minutes (depends how hard & crusty you want it). Remove and immediately brush with melted or softened butter.
