Chocolate Pretzel REINDEER Cookies
as many cookies as you want to make!
red M&Ms (1 per cookie) ........................candy eyes (2 per cookie)
pretzel rods (1 per cookie & break it in half)
can of cheap chocolate frosting (not whipped)
dark chocolate chips or chocolate melting bark (melted in microwave ~ may need to add a tsp. or so of Crisco)
Cover a baking sheet with waxed paper to put them on when you pour the melted chocolate over them.
Melt chocolate melting bark per package directions ~or~ dark chocolate chips with 1 tsp. Crisco (about 45 sec. in microwave ~ then whisk until the chocolate is melted). Better to make more than not enough ~ You can see the glass container that I keep extra in, in the refrigerator to melt and use on other stuff later.
Set out enough eyes and red M&Ms for each Reindeer before you start. TIP: you'll want to do this near the sink b/c you'll probably want to rinse off your fingers a few times (no matter how you try, you'll get chocolate on them & you don't want to get it on the eyes)
Cover the top of each cookie with a thick glob of canned frosting (this hardens quickly and acts as "glue"). Press 2 pretzel halves down into the frosting (make sure the broken end is on the bottom, where it will be covered by chocolate). It's good if there's enough frosting to actually squish up around the pretzel! I did all of them and then went on to the next step.
Stir up your melted chocolate and then spoon it over the pretzels (to where the cookie is underneath) and hopefully let it drip down the sides. I put the eyes and M&M nose on after I did the chocolate on 3 cookies (before it could harden) ~ make sure the eyes are on there firm enough to not slide down the pretzel! ... and try to remember to put the "m" on the M&M on the bottom, so it doesn't show when you do the nose.
Let them set on the counter for as long as it takes for the melted chocolate to get hard (depends on the humidity there ~ could be an hour or could be overnight ~ you could always put them in the freezer though). Then take a small sharp knife to cute around each cookie and get the excess chocolate off (You can put that into the covered glass container in your refrigerator since it's nothing except the melted chocolate and you can use it again another time). You may need to carefully slide a knife under them to loosen them too.
Now you can put them into a Tupperware on your counter (if you're going to use them within a few days) or into the freezer. ... or into little sandwich bags (the ones without a zip top) and tie them with ribbon (If you're going to do that. let them set on a paper towel a while first, to dry off from any moisture from being frozen, if you put them in the freezer to harden up.)
Why were my instructions so long for such a simple project? haha ~ just have fun and whoever the kids are will love them!
