Although this looks difficult, it's really very EASY to make! I've made it a few times, and last year my neighbor (who's really a non-baker) made it for the 4th of July and had no problems with it **

INGREDIENTS:
2 WHITE cake mixes (or 1 WHITE and 1 Red Velvet)
Ingredients to make both cakes (per package instructions), plus 1 tsp vanilla extract per cake.
2 containers store-bought WHITE frosting
RED and BLUE food coloring (paste, gel or neon)
OPTIONAL decorations: Sprinkles, Sparklers (to light)
Spray two 8" cake pans with non-stick spray and then put a circle of parchment paper inside. If you’re using 2 white cake mixes: Prepare one box and color it red. Divide the batter equally into the 2 pans and bake per box instructions. ~ While the red cakes are baking, prepare another batch of batter. Divide the batter into two bowls and color one with blue food color. Leave the remaining bowl of batter uncolored.
When your red cakes have baked and cooled, remove from pans. Wash and then prepare pans for the white and blue batter. Bake per box instructions and cool. You should now have:
1- 8" round blue cake
1- 8" round white cake
2- 8" round red cakes
Using a long serrated knife, slice the red and white layers horizontally in half. Now you have a blue layer (2″), four red layers (each 1″), and two white layers (each 1″). Set one white and two red layers aside (those will be the bottom three stripes of the flag).
Using a 4" cookie cutter, cut a circle out of remaining white layer and another circle out of one of the remaining red layers. (You will not use one of the red layers) Finally cut a 4" circle out the center of the blue cake.
You will have 2- 8" layers of red, 1- 4" layer of red, 1- 8" layer of white, 1- 4" layer of white and 1-8" layer of blue with a 4" circle cut out of the center. (these are diameter measures, not thickness)
ASSEMBLY:
Frost the bottom three layers together: set the uncut red layer on cake plate and spread with frosting. Top with the uncut white layer and spread with frosting. Top white layer with the uncut layer of red cake and spread with frosting. Set blue cake ring on top; lightly frost around the inside of the blue ring, and set the small white circle inside the blue outer circle. Frost, and top with the red inner circle. Frost the entire cake and top with sprinkles if desired
