But I had a coupon for these Chicken & Apple Sausages, so thought I'd try them. I normally do NOT like chicken as a substitute for beef ~ but these are the best sausages (or thick hot dogs) that I've ever had! (especially when my husband gets those deep char marks on them from the BBQ). There are only 4 thick ones in a package (I eat one; he eats 2). They're normally a little over $5, but totally worth the splurge! I don't know about other brands, but this is the brand I get @ Kroger or Walmart.
and on to the bun.... which used to be the cheapest generic ones, just something to put the hot dog/sausage into. Another coupon for Brioche style and I was hooked! I could eat just these buns with butter and be happy! They're also the perfect size for the chicken & apple sausages. Ok, so these are somewhere around $4 +/-, but again ~ be indulgent b/c these are worth it!
Since we have 4 buns left, I'll buy a container of pulled pork or beef (I get Lloyd's, but whatever you like) and that goes on the leftover Brioche buns! I'll usually make some homemade baked beans (some button links below), which are basically "dump & simmer" (I don't presoak the beans) ~ very cheap and much better than in a can (and lots more). You can have them on the side, or add them to the pulled pork if it's not enough. Turns out that the Chicken & Apple sausage and Brioche buns aren't as "pricey" if you can carry over to the next day (and then have the super cheap baked beans too)
