It has a streusel-like topping * and is actually similar to a crisp or cobbler **
The original recipe is for cherry pie filling with yellow cake mix, but I've made cherry with chocolate cake * apple with spice cake * and others. Use your imagination (or what you have on hand) **
***
CHERRY DUMP CAKE
1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling (extra cherry is best)
1 (15 ounce) can crushed pineapple (helps keep the cake really moist)
1 package butter or yellow cake mix (I like butter cake best)
8 ounces chopped nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts, macadamia or hazelnuts ~ I usually use pecans) **
1/2 cup butter
***
Preheat oven to 350. Spray a 9x13” pan with non-stick baking spray.
In prepared pan, mix cherries and pineapple. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pineapple, and cherry mixture stir until just combined. Then sprinkle nuts over top. Drizzle top with melted butter or margarine.
Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown, and toothpick comes out fairly clean. Cut into squares to serve. Can top with whipped cream or ice cream.
NOTE: ** If you don't like nuts (or have allergies), you can substitute mini-morsel CHOCOLATE CHIPS, or butterscotch chips, or Toffee or Heath bits.
